Tea in Art

Automat - Edward Hopper (1927)

The woman is described as gazing into a cup of coffee, but I like to think of it as tea.

In a way the woman looks sad in the picture. I hope the tea cheers her.

Beautiful painting. Funny - Hopper is such an brilliant painter of American themes, but if you image she is drinking tea, she could be in England - with coffee she is definitely in US.

A friend of mine loves strolling past the windows of an old Melbourne tea house and observing the couples having high tea.
