Halloween Image: Bewitching Tea

I've seen images of this photograph for years on everything from greeting cards to t-shirts. At first glance these ladies do indeed look like a coven of witches, but fear not and put the kettle on, tea friends. They are nothing more than a group of Welsh women dressed in traditional Welsh costume, invented in the 1830s by the very interesting and very Welsh Augusta Hall, Baroness Llanover of Monmouthshire. (Boy, did SHE ever need the services of "What Not To Wear"!!!)

If you do a Google image search Traditional Welsh Costume Tea you'll be treated to hundreds of great photographs and yes, they all look very "witchy"!

Nevertheless, it's a great Halloween pic, isn't it?!

How interesting...I was sure they were witches! Thanks for the history lesson...but they still look like witches to me!

It's the first time I've seen this photograph and without your knowledge, I would have assumed they were in witches costumes. I never knew this about the Welsh...yet I live only 2 hours from Wales. It's those toothless

I had a tea calendar a few years back that had this image for (what else?) October. Don't you wonder what the ladies would have thought of being known as witches!

I suspect there's something in history that explains why a comical popular image of witches matches this traditional Welsh dress. Could it be an American bias that's been forgotten except in the witchy portrayal? Well, I agree with you--let's have tea and leave it in the past. --Teaternity
